A View from the Bottom “Oilers make a trade of sorts. Feb 16 2012″

OK it's not huge news for some people but it is a start as the Oilers have made a trade today. As everyone here knows I am very much into tracking the Prospects and the teams at the levels below the NHL as I enjoy seeing the kids grow into the NHLers of the future.
Saying that the Oilers have traded one of my personal favourite depth players from the Barons. Ryan O'Marra was traded today from the Barons to the Anaheim Ducks for Defenseman Bryan Rodney. Just a ripple some would say, I for one am saying this is more than just a ripple.
This now give the Barons 9 defensemen. Yes they can send one down to Stockton Thunder to make room, and that will probably be defenseman Dyan Yeo who has 7 points in 24 games.
Bryan Rodney seems to be a defenseman in the Corey potter type mold. at 6'204 he has become a good journeyman AHL defenseman with a bit of offense. He just seems to be looking for the chance to make a jump to the NHL.
Bryan Rodney stats this year with the Syracruse Crunch:
GP-41 G-5 A-5 P-20 +/- _11 PM-10
Now This move also seems to be setting up another move for depth for the Oilers they lose a centerman for a offensive defenseman that will prolly stay with the Barons till the end of the year.
With all the speculation of the Oilers trading either Hemsky, Khabibulin, Gagner, Barker….etc. this move seems like the Oilers are trying to set up depth so they can take a peek at Plante or Teubert for a fair amount the rest of the season. which would mean they might have a deal on the table for Peckham or Barker.
Of course these are just my over tired ramblings trying to make sense of a trade for the Team in First place in the west in the AHL. Moving a player the caliber of O'Marra has helped them in the Checking role with the Barons will be felt by both AHL/NHL teams.
I want to hear your thoughts on what this will mean to the Oilers or the Barons. What say you? Thanks for taking the time to read A view from the bottom and have a great evening.

Love the passion Long, I have a feeling he will be what Potter is to the Oilers for the Barons.

Nice blog LB. I myself have a passion for watching the kids play and develop into the future NHLer's they will one day hopefully become. As far as this deal I believe it is more of a depth deal for the Barons to allow for a call up or 2 if the oil trade a d-man, but assist in a playoff run for them as well. As far as O'marra leaving, I'm sure Lander and Paajarvi will both be heading to OKC as soon as the oilers season is over. Lander will more than make up for the loss of O'marra at center. I definitely don't think the oilers are done making deals though, and think Peckham might very well be the next one on his way out.

Good stuff LB, I think the deal was to beef up the d-line in OKC as you mentioned but I also heard that Plante has a concussion and they are unsure of his status. I guess this move could give more ice time to Pitlick? This could be a good sign on his development. Also isn't Rodney a UFA after the season? I would doubt he would factor in as a call up to Edmonton but could get resigned to provide leadership in OKC?
Also as you mentioned, the Oilers could have a deal in the works (or at least plans) to trade Barker, Peckham or both? I hope they can flip both out the door. Teubert does stand a chance to be called up pending trades.

I am maybe one of those old fashioned guys that love/hates this time of year. I love the team making moves but hate when you trade a player who has been here less than a year. Barker has had a rough year and yet shown glimpses of what he could be. Last year when the fans were calling for Gilbert and Smid to be traded for bags of pucks, where would we be this year if we had actually done that?

"TY for the comments. As far as Rodney goes he is a UFA after this season and makes 525k. I would like to see what he does this season then maybe give him another 1 yr 2 way contract to shore up the depth and the exp while Marincin, Davidson, Blaine all make their way in the AHL.

I am sorry to see O'Marra go. I like Peckham but not as a player, hopefully we can get something decent for him. Maybe Barker can carry his bags,

I like the trade, that just goes to show how impressed the oilers management is with Lander. O'Marra deserves a chance, but not with the oilers. He's a good 4th line center, as well as a 2nd PK unit, type of player. Just like Lander. The oilers are making more room for when they draft another center in the draft. I just hope this is a sign of things to come

Great job as always LB. I love watching the young kids play together, but would have preferred saving OMarra and packaging him up with someone else to get some veteran experience on the blue line instead of more youth. I don't know who...but just mulling over the thought.
