Trade Talk – Oilers Trades And Signings To Come

Alright, so last time I had to vent a little about our Oilers. You can check that out HERE. But anyways, back to business. I read a couple of rumours today, and they actually made a lot of sense. But before I get into those, I better explain this blog. Not only am I going to take a look at a couple trades, I'm going to predict the next few months for the Oilers. And I am going to do it Sharkyzeee style. I am looking into my crystal ball and am going to predict the future.
First I'm going to predict what the Oilers will do on the deadline. Then for fun, I'm going to predict what happens in the offseason as well. I think it's time to stop hearing how we're out of the playoffs, but have a good future ahead. I would rather hear, wow they have a good team. It might be the home run stretch, but I wouldn't mind us taking some teams down with us. Along the lines of knocking a team from home ice advantage. But probably most of all, beat those loser Flames. I would love to see the Oilers beat them, and help keep them from the playoffs. Plus Feaster crying himself to sleep eating his words, would be absolutely amazing.
Trade Deadline Day
Oilers Acquire:
Luke Schenn, Conditional 2nd Round Pick (If Toronto Doesn't Make Playoffs, 3rd If They Do)
Maple Leafs Acquire:
Ales Hemsky, Nikolai Khabibulin, 3rd Round Pick
As every Oiler fan and their dog know, Schenn is being shopped by Burke. The Maple Leafs need a starting keeper to support Reimer, for a playoff run. They also need some secondary scoring, which Hemsky would bring. Plus it seems they like to take on health risk players (See Connolly, Armstrong). The added pick also helps them move up and have two picks, in the top 32. The Oilers get a defender they have been after for a long time. Plus to the Leafs, Khabibulin will help Reimer develop this year and next.
Oilers Acquire:
Jon Bernier
Kings Acquire:
Linus Omark, Theo Peckham
In this trade, instead of getting draft picks. The Kings get two assets for now and the future. Both players are restricted free agents at the end of the year. So not just rental players. Peckham would add to their meanness on the back end, which comes in handy playoff time. Omark would definitely help out their scoring. He could be a compliment player to Richards and Penner on the second line, moving Stoll down to third line center. A place he did very for us before, come the playoffs. We get that pesky keeper that can battle Dubnyk for the starting job. While not having great numbers this year, if given the opportunity it could push both keepers to the next level.
2012 NHL Draft
With the second overall pick. The Edmonton Oilers select from the Sting, Nail Yakupov.
While I know everyone is saying the Oilers are going to get a crack at Mikhail Grigorenko I have to disagree. Columbus has had a single roster spot open, since they came to the NHL. They have tried to fill it with prospects that can't, or trading for mid level guys. But non of them have worked out. So it came to a boiling point when they have up a fair bit to acquire Jeff Carter to be their 1st line center. That has not worked out. So with two players of equal skill, one a passer, the other a shooter. The key point will be, they choose the bigger one. The guy who plays a position they have been trying to get better at what seems like forever now.
So being the worst team in the NHL, and having a chance to draft a kid who can play that position. I am sorry but this is about as cut and dry as, when people where saying Larsson Vs Nugent-Hopkins. Yakupov is a deadly sniper, but he is along the same lines as Kane. He is strictly a right winger. His production, while not by a lot, lessens when used on the left wing. So the runner up prize, is EXACTLY what we need. So while some might be disappointed, I would be bouncing off the walls.
Oiler Signings
Dubnyk(RFA): 2 year $2.5M contract ($1.25M Cap Hit)
Petry(RFA): 2 year $5.0M contract ($2.5M Cap Hit)
Gagner(RFA): 4 year $13.0M contract ($3.25M Cap Hit)
Petrell(UFA): 1 year $1.0M contract
Smyth(UFA): 2 year $5.5M contract ($2.75 Cap Hit)
I have predicted a few moves. So here is what I think will be the starting line up, to open up the 2012-2013 season:
Paajarvi(1.525)/Nugent-Hopkins(3.775)/Eberle(1.158)
Hall(3.75)/Gagner(3.25)/Yakupov(3.8)
Smyth(2.75)/Horcoff(5.5)/Jones(1.5)
Eager(1.1)/Lander(0.9)/Hartikainen(0.875)
Belanger(1.75)/Petrell(1.0)
Whitney(4.0)/Schenn(3.6)
Smid(2.25)/Gilbert(4.0)
Sutton(1.75)/Petry(2.5)
Potter(0.775)
Bernier(1.25)
Dubnyk(1.25)
Total Cap Hit: $54.008
(Then we have enough room to sign Eberle/Hall in the next off season. Plus when we make a playoff push with this roster, they have room to add a rental or two.)

I agree with ya, but clb will draft first, and not take nail. He has fallen to 2nd on the rankings. So that why I think we'd get stuck with yakupov(best second place prize ever)

I hate to break up your dreams a bit here. Yakupov will be number1 pick still by a fairly wide margin so the critics say.
Edmonton with 50 points now will soon be catching Carolina and Buffalo as we are 3 and 4 points behind these two respectivly. Montreal, Islanders and Tampa all ahead of Edmonton by 6 points and Edm has at least a game in hand on everyone ahead of them.
As I said before I believe with 26 games left for Edm they will finish in the lottery but be picking between 5-10 so Yakupov is just some MSM type's pipe dream.

"Yakupov right now has dropped to 2nd on all lists but 1, with how mg is playing in the q, his stock has never been higher. If the oilers keep playing well we could move up, but if we keep playing barker we'll lose more than win

Great blog dude, very interesting read with some bold predictions. The Schenn trade would be sweet, but I could only see burke doing it if you take out the conditional pick. The Omark to LA would make sense as well, because even if the oil draft Grigorenko come June, then Gags could move to the wing.
Yakupov? I wish, but like LB says, I don't believe the oil will pick anywhere high enough for Yakupov unless they win the lotto. I think the oil will finish 3rd or 4th, and still hanging onto my "pick Murray prediction." I saw him play live in red deer this year and last, and love what I see in this kid. Good size for his age, but his IQ and mobility are off the charts, and I believe he is more ready for the NHL than anyone else in the draft. Look at Larssons impact in NJ this year. We could definitely use that.

Cool look at things Sharky but if you could pull off those trades you should be the GM. I would be shocked if Schenn was traded for that package, same goes for Bernier.
As for the draft Clb is in panic mode with 2 Russians topping the list, seeing that their history is not very good with them. Maybe a mass package of Gag's, Gilbert plus picks and prospect gets us their 1st to eliminate their worries...LOL
Good thoughts here Sharky.

"lol, at least thinking about that is helping me get through his sick pile of work. Work should never be allowed to get in the way of hockey... I have to take a better look at this.

Interesting idea's. I don't know if I am really sold on Schenn, he may cost far more than he's worth.

Good blog Sharkyzeee. Yakapov will go number 1, guarenteed !!! Brian Burke isn't that stupid. I wish he was, but he's not. I really like the fact that the oilers cap going into next season is set for when Hall / Eberle are RFA.

Sharky...I love reading your blogs. While I'm not the ideal person to go around making or suggesting trades, if you do somehow pull these off and become the GM, please hire me to do some lineup changes behind the bench. You know I'd whip those boys into shape
Good job on the blog
